What is Krill Oil?
Krill oil is extracted from Antarctic Krill, and is considered to be one of the best sources of omega-3 for our body. Krill are pelagic crustaceans that mainly consume phytoplankton and some zooplankton and are in turn a major source of food for many larger marine animals. Although krill reside in all oceans, the Antarctic Krill species (Euphausia superba) is found exclusively in the Southern Ocean.
Antarctic krill have a very high content of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA, which have been proven in numerous studies across several decades to have health benefits in many areas. Oil produced from krill has been clinically tested for the past decade and was found to be beneficial to our health (read more).
What are the Unique Benefits of K•REAL® Compared to Other Krill Oils?
•REAL® krill oil has been clinically proven by Enzymotec to be more efficient than fish oil at increasing omega-3 levels in our blood.
K•REAL krill oil is manufactured through a specialized and proprietary technology called Multi Stage Oil extraction (MSO®), developed by Enzymotec. This technology assures high quality oil and superior organoleptic properties compared to other commercially available products (read more).
Recently Enzymotec presented another breakthrough in krill oil quality standards. By applying a new set of biological quality parameters that evaluate krill oil quality after consumption, Enzymotec proved that K•REAL® krill oil provides the highest availability of omega-3.
Enzymotec is the only krill oil manufacturer that produces several grades of krill oil. Our unique concept enables our customers to choose the most suitable krill oil for their needs from among a diverse range of grades.
What Are the Advantages of K•REAL® krill Oil Over Fish Oil?
Krill oil has many benefits attributed to its unique source and its unique composition, resulting from Enzymotec’s very special extraction method.
Unique composition — Unlike almost all other omega-3 oils, which are triglyceride-based, the omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) in K•REAL® krill oil are attached to phospholipids as well as to triglycerides.
Unique extraction — To obtain this special composition, krill oil is produced from Antarctic krill using Enzymotec’s Multi Stage Oil extraction process (MSO®), which assures the extraction of high quality oil rich in omega-3 in its natural phospholipid form (read more).
What are Phospholipids and What Are Their Benefits?
Phospholipids are a unique family of fatty molecules which are distinct from the main fats in our diet (triglycerides) in both their structure and their role in the body. Phospholipids are considered the building blocks of cell membranes, while triglycerides are used by the human body mainly as energy storage molecules.
Phospholipids are amphipathic molecules, meaning they have a water soluble part, which enables them to function as components of biological membranes. This unique property also improves their absorption, leading to better absorption of omega-3 fatty acids. The ability of phospholipids to mix with water is also the reason why, unlike fish oil, krill oil does not cause a fishy aftertaste and fishy burps.
What are EPA and DHA and why are they important?
EPA and DHA are both omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown, in numerous studies, to enhance quality of life, lower the risk of premature death, and have a significant positive influence on human health due to a wide range of health benefits. Among these health benefits, cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention may be the best recognized. Other well-known functions and benefits of omega-3 include anti-inflammation, brain development, behavior, and mood. Omega-3 fatty acids seem to be vital throughout human life, from embryo development through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and the senior years.
What are the health benefits of krill oil?
The health benefits of krill oil supplementation for human health have been extensively studied in humans and in animal models. Krill oil has been shown to reduce the negative action of chronic inflammation, improve joint health, improve blood lipid profile, ameliorate Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) symptoms, improve cognitive function, improve liver health, as well as additional health benefits. Does K•REAL® Krill Oil have a fishy smell or aftertaste?
When Krill oil is of high-quality and fresh, the smell and taste are similar to fish, and can be easily masked if necessary. The typical foul smell, which can become a serious issue and which many consumers complain about, comes from high levels of Total Volatile basic Amines (TVN) and trimethylamine (TMA), two compounds which are naturally found in krill oil.
However, it is important to emphasize that the concern is not with the foul smell per se, but rather with the fact that this smell indicates the degree of spoilage which the krill has undergone. Enzymotec is the first, and thus far the only, company that has voluntarily adopted low TVN and TMA levels as key quality criteria to make sure that they are the lowest levels possible over time.
Is K•REAL® krill oil a good supplement for supporting people who engage in sports or lead an active lifestyle?
There are a number of reasons why K•REAL® krill oil is good for those dealing with sports. K•REAL® is the only krill oil that has been shown to assist in muscle recovery following intense exercise. Moreover, subjects who train often have a reduced omega-3 index. K•REAL® is the only krill oil shown clinically to improve the omega-3 index, relative to fish oil.
How does K•REAL® krill oil address new market trends, such as low sodium?
K•REAL® krill oil is the first, and currently only, krill oil to contain low sodium levels as defined by the European health authorities (EFSA). This breakthrough in krill oil quality enables manufacturers of K•REAL®-based krill oil products to include blood pressure-related health claims on their product labels. Read more…
Is K•REAL® krill oil sustainable?
Enzymotec’s krill oil products, sourced from sustainable fishery, are eligible to bear the “Friend of the Sea” seal identifying their origin from a sustainable source. This provides consumers with a guarantee of sustainability and effective fishery management.
The sustainability of Antarctic krill is crucial for the marine life of the Southern Ocean, and its harvesting is closely monitored by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).
Enzymotec guarantees that all krill biomass used for the manufacturing of its K•REAL® krill oil is supplied only from vessels and facilities monitored by CCAMLR.
CCAMLR defined an annual sustainable harvesting quota which is 9% of the total estimated biomass. However, out of abundant caution CCAMLR has set an even lower precautionary quota on the annual krill harvest of only 620,000 tons. The actual current catch in the Southern Ocean is less than 250,000 tons per year, a mere fraction of the biomass.
It is also interesting to understand that most of the krill harvested today, actually as much as 95% of it, goes not for human benefits but for animal feed. Unlike other krill oil producers, Enzymotec harvests krill only for human consumption, meaning that while Enzymotec is one of the leading suppliers of krill oil in the market, our krill catch is one of the lowest. What is the difference between the various krill oil supplements found in the market today? What are K•REAL® krill oil’s quality markers?
The quality parameters used today for measuring krill oils are mainly chemical parameters that are tested during shelf life. However, those parameters do not refer to the changes in a krill oil’s biological activity after consumption. Establishing an industry first, Enzymotec has defined quality parameters for krill oil through the entire supply chain, from its harvesting until it reaches the digestion system. By using a simulation model for measuring the biochemical quality of krill oil in the digestion system, Enzymotec sets biological quality parameters to be used on top of the standard ones.
All leading krill oil brands sold today were tested in this quality model and it was found that the only krill oil that successfully meets these quality parameters is Enzymotec’s krill oil. Read more…
